A painstakingly dull process of repeatedly firing a small caliber gun, close range, into a painted sheet of aluminium, is called Deweaponizing the gun. This seemingly useless task, one which should never involve a sane person, is not, as we find out, in any way associated with any sort of dementia. It is, in fact, art. How so? Well, even if Walton Creel would not make lovely portraits of animals while executing the task of repeatedly firing a small caliber gun, close range, into a painted sheet of aluminium, it would still serve to make the same point – though in a visually, slightly less appealing manner. The thing that happens, in this task, is that the gun is tamed – it’s nature transformed. The author is willing to endure the back-pain and the unrewarding dumbness we suspect this task might incur, for the reward of being able to say he’s used a tool of destruction for creation. And indeed, he’s shown that, even though it might not be easy, every purpose can be reinvented.

You know how a forensic artist can draw/sketch a suspect’s face using information from an interview with the victim? Kevin Van Aelst, in an exercise similar to those of the CSI, replicates, to a very high degree of accuracy, his own fingerprints. We believe this practice would not be terribly useful in solving a case of crime, since there is no obvious need for representing fingerprints, say, on a pie. In fact, we can’t think of any practical use for this particular work of Mr. Van Aelst, so, we call it – Art.

And, no. Mr. Van Aelst does not have only 8 fingers. For security reasons we left out a thumb and an index finger.

Earlier we published an article about fashion accessories made from various foods. Now, with appropriately cooked clothing, we can finally be, fully and tastefully dressed.

A crew of 15, led by Ami Goodheart, designed, cooked and assembled the tasty garments. The most complex piece was the Artichoke gown, which took 6 hours to assemble on a model – leaf by leaf. The model had to stand through the whole process. So you wouldn’t feel too sorry for the models, they were all dressed in a meal they felt like having at the time. We hope they cooked more than the tailor required.

Seeing how all of the favorite cartoon characters of our childhood are now deceased or living exclusively in Disneyland, replaced by various Pokemon clones on TV, we find this Natural History museum – like setting quite appropriate. “What’s up, Doc?” and “I tawt I taw a puddy tat” echoes joyfully in our mind, as we call to memory the various idiosyncrasies of these beautiful creatures of times long gone. May you rest in the same mischievous bliss you’ve spent your long lives in. Many thanks and both thumbs up to Hyungkoo Lee, for his Animatus series. “Meep, meep!!”

This is what happens – Adam Ellis, who never eats tomatoes, ever, has some time on his hands. Feeling somewhat bored, he browses through photos of his friends on Facebook and creates cartoonish, caricaturish drawings of the ones he finds interesting. He does it, clearly, without consent of people represented and fears they might not approve, wondering how come he’s still got friends at all. Well, we think he’ll have even more friends now, seeing how his drawings are very likable, funny and overall really good. For the disgruntled friend: Take a look around his blog and you’ll find lots of funny, stupid and half-dressed drawings of Adam himself that might make you feel better.

Paris, Zurich, New York and London have been verbally mapped. Ursula Hitz has designed detailed and accurate maps of these cities, using typography. She hand creates letters that name city boroughs with respect to their placement and size. These maps don’t just look good, but have practical values as well – they’re geographically correct and while they don’t show specific streets, you get quite a good impression of the citie’s organic structure. You wouldn’t use them to navigate around town, but to get familiar with it. The way letters in the names of boroughs reflect not only their size, but also try to capture their character is a combination of love for and understanding of intricate city structures, that the artist draws upon.

A frequent subject of Maskull Lasserre‘s sculpting work is a skull. This Canadian/South African artist is a highly imaginative explorer of the mundane, whose expeditions, in the end, reveal anything but. He studied philosophy, visual art and sculpture – all fields, never left out of his artwork. Mr. Lasserre sculpts out the potential for nostalgia, allegory, humor and the macabre we never knew existed in everyday structures. Looking at the transformations objects have undergone by his hand makes us ask ourselves about the immediate reality. For instance: Can it really always be just an inch from totally unexpected?

Innovation is key, and a playful mind is what will get you there. Owen Gildersleeve is a London based illustrator and a designer with a taste for new. Although he uses computers, naturally, his work is characterized better by unique hand-craft. Most of the images you see below are a mix of graphic design, illustration and in most part, contribution of busy fingers cutting, shaping and folding different materials that were missing from the whole. Mr. Gildersleeve’s worked with many international companies, and we hope he continues to.

In 1989, father of The Simpsons was commissioned by Apple to create a brochure to advertise Macs to students. He used characters from his comic book Life in Hell, and various student stereotypes. It was called Who needs a computer anyway? A student’s guide.

Master Puzzler

Gerhard Mayer is an educated German multidisciplinary artist, with varied interests. In his sculptures, he investigates visible effects of quantum physics – his drawings are made using seven simple shapes – and his puzzle work is, well, puzzling. It’s in a very limited medium where he tries to break most boundaries. Puzzles are cut to specific shapes and fragments of an image on different pieces must come together in a specific way, and in exactly one correct place, to create a coherent overall image. These limiting factors seem to amuse Mr. Mayer greatly, as he bends the rules and creates puzzle images over 5 meters long and 2 meters tall. Using pieces from who knows how many different puzzle sets he mixes fur with foliage, flowers with fireworks, landscape with architecture – creating images of real artistic value from simple brain teasers. Although these must be very time-consuming to make, we can definetly feel the artists enjoyment of the process simply by looking at the finished image.
