The work of Vivian Maier escaped obscurity “by a whisker”. Reclusive but a strong minded lady, she supported herself working as a nanny in Chicago, where she returned to from Europe. During the second half of the 20th century, her foremost passion were mundane marvels of Street-Life, inconspicuous to the common eye as she was to situations they were formed in. We can imagine Lady Maier had a certain unobtrusive air about her, enabling her to be up-close to her subjects but never in the way. She eventually fell into poverty but was saved by three of the children she nannied. In the meantime, due to financial troubles one of her storage lockers, filled with undeveloped negatives, was auctioned. It was acquired in 2007, also in an auction, by a historian John Maloof who is largely responsible for the publication of her works.

Rest in Peace, Doc!
Seeing how all of the favorite cartoon characters of our childhood are now deceased or living exclusively in Disneyland, replaced by various Pokemon clones on TV, we find this Natural History museum – like setting quite appropriate. “What’s up, Doc?”
