Jump! for the camera, Marilyn

Philippe Halsman, a Latvian-born photographer, other than serving four years in prison for patricide (convicted for killing his father) is most famous for his work with Salvador Dali, and the photograph of mourning Albert Einstein – reminiscing of his role in the US’s pursuit for the atom bomb, during the photo session. “Jump” is a series of portraits of various celebrities of the time, caught by the camera in mid-air. The effects of such a composition dissociate the subject from the immediate reality and portray them in a particular state of honesty to one-selves inner child, regardless of the function, reputation or the notion of self one would normally tend to propagate. Genius of these images is in the simplicity of the manner used to pierce through to the eldest layers of personalities.
